  • Interest and Dividend Tax: 5% assessed on interest and dividend income (assessed on shares earning interest and dividends of more than $2,400 annually).
  • Inheritance and Estate Tax: 18% - applies to non-lineal relatives (brothers/sisters, nieces/nephews, cousins or friends). Spouse, lineal relatives and charities are exempt.
  • Business Profits Tax: 8.5% assessed on any income earned by conducting business in the state.
  • Business Enterprise Tax: 0.75% assessed on the enterprise value tax base (sum of all compensation, interest, and dividends).
  • Communication Services Tax: 7% on all two-way communications.
  • Electricity Consumption Tax: $.00055 per kilowatt hour of electricity used.
  • Meals and Rentals Tax:
  • Hotels: 8%
  • Restaurants: 8%
  • Car Rentals: 8%
  • Tobacco Tax: $.80 per pack of 20 cigarettes; $1.00 per pack of 25 cigarettes. Tax rate for smokeless tobacco and loose tobacco is established twice a year.
  • Real Estate Transfer Tax: $.75 per $100 of the total price of the transfer.
  • Timber Tax: 10% of the stumpage value at the time of cutting. Ornamental trees, nursery stock, Christmas trees, firewood for heating or manufacture of maple syrup are exceptions.
  • Gravel Tax: None when more than 1000 cubic yards of earth are not removed.
  • Property Tax:
  • State Education Property Tax: $3.33 per $1,000 of property value. Collected by local municipalities.
  • Utility Property Tax: $6.60 per $1,000 of property value.
  • Local Property Tax: Assessed and collected by local municipalities. Some exemptions and credits may be granted to the elderly, physically handicapped, disabled and veterans. Exemptions may also be given when the property owner uses wind, solar or wood heating energy systems.
