  • General: 6.5% ; additional sales and use tax may be levied by counties and cities up to 8.9%
    • Food: Food not bought for immediate consumption is exempt from sales tax

    • Gasoline: 31 cents / gal
    • Diesel: 28 cents / gal
  • Tobacco:
    • Cigarettes: $2.025 per pack of 20 cigarettes
    • Other Tobacco: 75% of retail price
  • Alcohol:
    • Distilled: Sales tax charged for on premises consumption; licenses and fees apply to state controlled liquor sales
    • Wine: $.87 per gallon; fortified wine: $1.72 per gallon
    • Beer: $.261 per gallon
  • Farm Machinery: 6.5%
  • Rental or Leasing Tax Rates
    • Automotive: 6.8%
    • Hotel & Lodging: all hotels and transient lodging is taxed at varying rates per area from 7% to 8.9%
    • Housing Tax Rates: 2%
  • Miscellaneous Information
    • Utility Tax Rates: Gas/sewer, 3.852%; water, 5.029%; urban trans., 0.642%; motor & railroad trans., 1.926%; power, 3.873%; all others, 1.926%
  • Property Tax: Assessed on 100% fair market value at best use for property. Tax rate is decided by local communities based on revenues needed. Avg. $7.32 - $15.75 per $1,000 assessed value
  • Income Tax: Washington does not charge state income tax, nor does it charge corporate income tax. There is no inheritance tax, but estate taxes are rated by the amount of the estate.
  • Retirement Income: Washington does tax retirement income earned and received from another state.
